IK Multimedia has unveiled the TONEX 2.0 Player Public Beta, the most significant update to the TONEX ecosystem to date. This version introduces extensive changes to the user interface and significantly expands the range of features.
According to IK Multimedia, the first thing to keep in mind before installation is:
"Important: Before updating, please note that TONEX for Mac/PC 2.0 BETA will overwrite TONEX for Mac/PC 1.12.1, so we strongly urge users to back-up their existing TONEX library. Click here for full instructions."
New Features in TONEX 2.0
At its core is a completely redesigned interface that combines Gear, Signal Chain, and Library into a single workspace. A new photorealistic Gear experience enables more visual editing of the Signal Chain. Navigation has been streamlined with dedicated, scalable browsers and a Smart Search feature that lets you instantly find Tone Models, presets, and collections.
In addition, integration with ToneNET has been enhanced, allowing users to browse, download, and manage content directly in the browser. In terms of content, there are up to 220 new Premium V2 Tone Models, ranging from vintage classics to boutique sounds and modern high-gain sounds. These models are free for existing TONEX MAX users; others can upgrade for an additional fee.
Release Status and Timeline
There is currently some uncertainty regarding the release date of the final version. The current version is a public beta that is available free of charge to all existing TONEX users.
There is no exact date for the official release. When asked on the official forum, a representative from IK Multimedia confirmed that there is “no stated timeline” for the end of the beta phase. Although the final version has been announced as a free update for all users, exactly when the status will change from “beta” to “release” depends on user feedback and stability.
User Feedback on the Beta
Since this is a beta, users are already sharing their initial experiences. While the improved usability and new design are being praised, there are also some technical teething problems.
Some users reported issues transferring the library, where presets or custom IRs were initially not visible after the update (reloading the library often helped in these cases). Others reported startup issues on Windows 10, while Windows 11 ran smoothly. In addition, some users would like to see features such as scenes with spillover for live performances or the ability to add booster pedals directly—features that are currently missing or are considered in need of improvement.
