The legendary Peavey 5150
The Peavey 5150 is a legendary 120-watt tube amplifier developed in 1992 in collaboration with Eddie Van Halen. It is considered one of the most influential high-gain amplifiers in music history and helped shape the sound of heavy metal and hard rock.
Key features:
- Two channels: Rhythm (with Clean/Crunch switch) and Lead (heavily distorted, for the iconic “Brown Sound”).
- 6L6GC power tubes: Deliver a punchy, clear, and aggressive tone with a strong low end.
- Resonance and Presence controls: Enable precise tone shaping, especially important for metal and down-tunings.
- Footswitch control: For channel switching and effects loop.
After the collaboration with Eddie Van Halen ended, Peavey continued producing the amplifier under the name 6505 - identical in construction but with a new name for legal reasons. The 5150/6505 remains popular today with bands like Machine Head, Trivium, and Atreyu and continues to be a standard for powerful, modern guitar sounds.
