The Guitar Amp Suite Maine by remi DSP is a little gem among guitar amp simulators. Maine basically has all the effects you need for playing and practicing, and it features a beautiful user interface.
Unfortunately, aside from the remi DSP website, there’s hardly anything—if anything at all—about Maine on the internet. No videos. No blog posts. And nothing on Reddit. At least, I couldn’t find anything.
That’s surprising, because Maine is a great plugin available for macOS (app + AU + VST3 + AAX) and Windows (standalone + VST3). A Linux version would be highly desirable, since the Linux community seems to be growing steadily, and I, too, would be happy to finally move away from Windows entirely.
Here’s what makes Maine special to me and why I recommend trying out this guitar amp sim in this article:
- It offers all the high-quality effects you typically need for playing guitar.
- NAM and IR Loader with Tone3000 integration
- A wonderful layout with a very smooth workflow.
In my opinion, that last point isn’t insignificant at all. Of course, the sound has to be right. But you’re looking at the plugin window the whole time. There are guitar amp sims whose GUI I just don’t like. That’s a matter of taste, of course. But if I’m constantly looking at a plugin I don’t like, I’ll end up using it less and less—or not at all—over time.
I really like Maine’s design, and that’s why I especially enjoy playing with this plugin.
It might sound trivial, but it’s true.
Of course, if I didn’t like the sound, even the most beautiful layout wouldn’t be able to save it. But you know the saying about food: “You eat with your eyes first.”
Everything about Maine is just right—the sound and the layout. That’s why I highly recommend everyone give Maine a try. Maine is a real gem.
Maine consists of 11 views
- 2 Amps - Camden a British chime & Portland British crunch and a NAM Loader for own captures
- 2 Cabinets - the cabs of the two Amps and an IR Loader for own IRs
- Drive - NAM pedal capture
- Gate - hum-cancelling noise gate
- Pitch - whammy, harmony & octave
- Wah - pedal wah & envelope filter
- Comp - opto sustainer
- Chorus - BBD analog
- Delay - A/B tape-warm engines
- Reverb - one lush 3-D space
- EQ & Compressor / Limiter
In addition, Maine has a tuner, MIDI, the usual audio/MIDI settings, and a preset manager.
The signal chain for each module can be customized however you like. All you have to do is drag the module to the desired location with the mouse. It doesn't get any easier than that. Awesome!
One important feature is that Maine has integrated a Tone3000 browser for the Pedal captures, NAMs, and IRs, which allows you to log in with your account.
What I would change or improve about Maine
Basically, there’s only one thing. In the Tone3000 browser, I couldn’t find an input field that lets you search specifically for a NAM capture or an IR. It shows the latest uploads, or you can view a list of your own favorites. Unfortunately, there’s no search function. That’s a real shame and does limit the Tone3000 integration somewhat. Hopefully, the developers will implement this in one of the next updates.
If I’ve overlooked something and there is a search function after all, please let me know.
Although, there is one more thing I'd like to mention. It would be helpful to include the current version number and a changelog on the website.
